Inspired by the long time editor of Lesbian News, Barbara McLauchlin, whose onmyplanet.ca video story is here, and courtesy of the stupendous personal library of Lahl, I have begun posting .pdf files from a few years of Lesbian News, Victoria’s Monthly Lesbian Feminist Newsletter – later named The Lavender Rhinoceros. I will periodically post more scanned / pdf issues of this local Victoria Lesbian Magazine.

Janet
Janet talks about being pushed out of the closet and the importance of family acceptance. At the time of this recording Janet was on the board of GLOSSI on Salt Spring Island.
Janet’s story was part of a group of stories recorded on Salt Spring Island, partially sponsored by GLOSSI (Gays and Lesbians of Salt Spring Island). The group was renamed and is now DIASSI – Diverse and Inclusive Salt Spring Island.
Rebecca
Rebecca, an artist and dancer, grew up in an artistic and performance oriented family, familiar with many genders and orientations. She speaks of her mother’s struggle to get her to conform and of her own struggle to find her identity.
Danielle
Danielle, a trans woman, talks about her long history of political work in the trans and women’s communities and of finding herself. Thank-you Danielle, for all the good work that you do.
Danielle passed away in March of 2014 from a very aggressive cancer. RIP Danielle. A memorial page has been set up for Danielle on facebook; Here.
Danielle’s story was part of a series of videos collected at Vancouver Pride in 2012. This series was partially sponsored by Qmunity in Vancouver.
Leslie
Leslie is an out lesbian and is politically active. She speaks about a number of issues that occurred simultaneously with her coming out.
Daphne
Daphne is a transexual, pan-sexual, self-identified woman. She is very involved in her return to college and the Pride group at her school. See Daphne’s Youtube Channel
Barb
Barb has a lot of herstory in her hometown. She has been involved in the lesbian and gay community since she moved to Victoria in 1973.
Among her accomplishments is that she was one of the organizers of the very first Pride March in Victoria.
Barb recently published a book about the theatre community: Here We Go Again, An hysterical account of Canadian Theatre’s Coming of Age
Sylvie
Sylvie is a French Canadian Lesbian, who was raised in the Catholic faith.
Dawn
Dawn was Co-founder of the now defunct, Out of the Closet Renew Boutique which opened on July 2nd of 2010 in downtown Victoria, BC. She recounts her early memories of the word lesbian, coming out, gender roles and lesbian art.
