Erica
Erica is a trans woman who talks about her personal struggle with gender identity and internalized transphobia. After denying her gender for many years she began transition in her early 50’s. As a successful business woman in Minneapolis, she feels it is important to give back to her community and support others. Since transitioning she has become involved with many charitable organizations.
Erica’s story is one of a series of stories collected at the Moving Trans History Forward Conference, put on by the Transgender Archives at the University of Victoria in March of 2016. The MTHF conference provided onmyplanet.ca with a space to record stories on site during the conferences of 2014, 2016 and 2018.
Miki
Miki is a visual artist that began to dance in 2005. She talks about her ongoing transformation as an artist and as a trans woman. Miki dances with a number of modern dance companies in Saskatoon and maintains her own website at: mikimappin.com/.

Graham
Graham is a professional dancer and choreographer. He is a principal dancer in national and international works. Here he talks about growing up in a small western Canadian city, his relationship with his mom and his experiences as a gay man in the world of dance. Graham is currently the Head of Contemporary Dance at the Alberta School of Ballet.

Sarah
Sarah is an artist in Toronto. Having grown up in a very homophobic home she talks about coming out in her forties. She found support at the 519 Community Centre and eventually started a women’s coming out group there. You can find more about Sarah’s artwork here.

Martine
Martine is a union activist and a trans activist. Martine has been on the National Pink Triangle Committee at CUPE for the last ten years. Her human rights case brought back public funding for Gender Reassignment Surgery in Ontario. The group she helped form; The Trans Health Lobby Group successfully lobbied for trans people’s right to change the gender on official identification documents without surgery. CUPE supported Martine in a number of ways throughout her human rights case (7 years). Martine and the Trans Lobby Group are now lobbying for Bill C279 for gender identity to be included in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Rock on Martine.

Joyce
Joyce talks about her experience living on women’s land in southern Manitoba and reflects on women’s community.

Deidra
Deidra is a strong union and trans activist. She talks about her transition and how positive a change it was for her. Deidra works in a carpentry shop for the City of Regina and was the first person to transition while employed by the city. She is now in her third term with the National Pink Triangle Committee with CUPE.

Terry
Terry’s story was recorded a few years ago (in fact he was one of the first!) and the video has just resurfaced now. Terry talks candidly about his experiences in life and the variety of careers he’s had – a waiter, a musician and a sex-ed porn star.
