Allies in Action
An all-ages event for seniors
Coming in Sept. Oct. and Nov. of 2024 and Feb. of 2025
Onmyplanet.ca and MediaNet Victoria / FLUX Media Gallery are proud to present Allies in Action, A series of community discussion events about activism, inclusion and DIY community building, guided by the experiences of 2SLGBTQIA+ older adults.
Meet some of your community, bring your ideas, your sense of adventure, and prepare to get involved.
Come for one event or come to them all.
It’s free to register and there’ll be great snacks!!
What to expect from an Allies in Action event:
- A screening of a ~ 45 mins documentary video (1 of a 4 part series) that centres the experiences of 2SLGBTQIA+ older adults (55+), promotes Inclusion and Allyship, and highlights stories of activism and community building practices.
- A moderated discussion that builds awareness of 2SLGBTQIA+ issues and experiences, finds similarities with the participants’ current situations and encourages taking inspiration from the video stories, toward a little DIY community building.
- Organizations that provide services for seniors are invited to attend to gain some first hand insight from the videos, and maybe get some ideas for future initiatives brought forward in the discussion. Organizations will have information about their programs and initiatives on hand to help participants connect with existing services.
- Organizations that connect older adults and younger generations are invited to attend to encourage some intergenerational exchange.
There will be Four, Allies in Action events – three in the Fall of 2024 and one in Feb. of 2025, starting in the third week of Sept.

Generational Allies Module 3 is up!!
Hello from Generational Allies!!
We’re thrilled to let you know that the third Generational Allies workshop is now up and running at onmyplanet.ca. You can find the new workshop materials and videos at: https://onmyplanet.ca/gen-allies-module-3/.
We’re back to working on the next few Generational Allies workshops and over the next few months they will be posted on the Generational Allies Workshop Modules pages. We invite you to take a look and think about how these workshops and materials might be helpful in your communities.
In the new year we’ll be orienting our older adult 2SLGBTQIA+ facilitators and connecting them with organizations in BC that provide services to seniors to set up workshops in communities across BC. If you know of an organization where you’d like to see a workshop delivered – please let us know. We’d be happy to contact them and get things going.
A big thank you goes out to all our storytellers, our advisory committee and everyone that helped out and lent us space or made donations toward the project – we couldn’t have done it without you. See our Sponsors Page.
Hope you enjoy the new workshop materials and videos – please feel free to send us some feedback from the contact page. We’re looking forward to hearing from you.
xo

Looking For Storytellers
Generational Allies is now looking for storytellers!!
Are you LGBQT2SI+ identified? Over 55? Would you like to be interviewed about your life experiences for the Generational Allies Workshops? We are particularly looking for Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) folks. We very much want to include your voices and your stories in all their complexities and intersectionalities.
Does this sounds like you, or like people you know? Then get in touch, and tell us about your fabulous story. Tell your friends and family about us. Help us find the great stories that we know are out there. You can send an email to lulu at onmyplanet dot ca or you can use the contact form on the website. Let us know where you’re located, (preference will be given to those on Vancouver Island or the Lower Mainland of BC, but there’s a possibility of doing a Zoom interview) and please include your contact information (phone, email, and mailing address). It would also be good for us to know your age and how you identify.
The interviews will take place in late summer and early fall of 2021 at a variety of locations on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. Everyone involved in conducting and recording the interviews will be fully vaccinated and all CoVid Protocols will be observed.
We can’t wait to hear your story!!
We are happy to answer any questions you may have about the project, the interview process or about us, the workshop developers.
The Generational Allies Workshops are intended to start conversations among a wide range of older adults to support Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Queer, Transgender, Two-Spirit and Intersex (LGBQT2I+) inclusion and the development of allyship practices. All the workshops are based on personal experience stories from LGBQT2SI+ older adults (55+). Interviews with storytellers will be recorded on video and edited into 5-10 min videos that focus on specific issues faced by older LGBQT2I+ folks and will form the basis of the workshop discussions. They are meant to be hosted by organizations that already provide services to older adults, and are to be presented/facilitated by LGBTQ2SI+ older adults. Once complete, the workshop materials will be available as free downloads on the onmyplanet.ca site.
Generational Allies Update
Generational Allies is moving along nicely.
The online survey is wrapping up very soon and we are now starting to schedule our focus groups for mid-February. If you’re over 55, identify under the rainbow and you’re interested in sharing some of your knowledge and experience, send us an email. Let us know how you identify and which group you think you’d fit best in (IE: Lesbian, Two-Spirit, Non-Binary, Gay, etc.) We’d especially like to hear from you if you identify as Two-Spirit, Trans or Non-Binary/Gender Non-Conforming.
The Online Survey for Generational Allies will be closing January 31st at Midnight. If you haven’t done the survey yet, now’s your chance.
Thank you to those of you that have done the survey and volunteered for the focus groups. If you already told us you want to be part of a focus group, we’ve sent out an email invitation this last week – if you know you’re on the list and didn’t get the email – check your junk folders, or get in touch with us and let us know you still want to get involved.
We’ve heard from a number of people from all over the rainbow and we’re excited about how the whole project progressing. Everyone has a wealth of experience and insight and we can’t wait to bring all that into the project. We know the stories we’re going to uncover are eye openers and they will make for compelling workshops. We’re looking forward to hearing from you, xo Lulu
